S&P 500, Nasdaq hit new records, US stocks open mixed

Indexes climb shortly after first bell; Dow falls 0.23%

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 climbed to new highs Tuesday as US stocks opened on a mixed note.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 89 points, or 0.23%, to 39,233 at 9.40 a.m. EDT.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, added 10 points, or 0.19%, to its new record-high of 5,583.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, gained 64 points, or 0.36%, to hit an all-time high of 18,470.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.24% to 12.40. The 10-year US Treasury yield added 0.64% to 4.293%.

The dollar increased 0.04% to 105.04, while the euro gained 0.03% to $1.0825 against the greenback.

Precious metals inched higher, with gold rising 0.26% to $2,365 per ounce and silver adding 0.96% to $31.05.

Oil prices were down around 0.4%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $85.38 and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $81.97.
