ANKARA (AA) – Spain beat Costa Rica 3-0 in a Friday FIFA Women's World Cup match to make a splendid start to the tournament.
Costa Rica's Valeria Del Campo Gutierrez scored an own goal in the minute 21 in Wellington, New Zealand.
Spain doubled the lead two minutes later as Aitana Bonmati had an effort in the area to beat Costa Rican goalkeeper Daniela Solera.
The Spanish women were in full control as they made it 3-0 in the 27th minute. Esther Gonzalez scored a close-range volley.
Following a foul in the box, Spain were awarded a penalty in the first half. But Jenni Hermoso's penalty was saved. The Spanish team finished the job in the first 45 minutes.
Victors Spain are leading Group C. Costa Rica lost their first match in the group.
Japan will face Zambia in another Group C match on Saturday.
