KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Sudan on Monday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group of systematically destroying the capital Khartoum.
Sudan has been ravaged by clashes between the army and the RSF since April, in a conflict that killed thousands, according to medics.
"The rebel militia continues its heinous terrorist crimes aimed at eliminating the pillars of the state,” the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry accused the paramilitary group of carrying out acts of sabotage and fires “as part of an evil and systematic campaign to destroy the capital.”
The RSF “targeted a number of major and important economic institutions and commercial buildings, which are among the pillars of the national economy,” the statement said, calling on the international community “to label the RSF as a terrorist organization.”
There was no comment from the paramilitary group on the accusation.
On Sunday, the two warring rivals traded accusations of torching government buildings in the Sudanese capital.
Images shared on social media showed smoke billows rising from the buildings of the Justice Ministry, the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization and several other buildings.
Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudi and US mediators have failed to end violence in Sudan.
According to the United Nations, more than 5.25 million people have been displaced by the ongoing fighting in Sudan.
