KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - Sudan on Tuesday reported 1,205 deaths from cholera along with 44,729 infected cases since August across the war-torn country.
In a statement, the Sudanese Health Ministry said that 43 new cholera cases were recorded across several states, without reporting fresh fatalities, bringing the total number of cases to 44,729 and 1,205 deaths.
The cholera cases are registered in 11 states out of 18, including Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Al-Qadarif, Kassala, Nile River, Northern State, White Nile, and Sennar, the ministry said.
In early August, Sudan declared cholera as an epidemic in the country.
Cholera, a bacterial disease typically spread through contaminated water, causes severe diarrhea and dehydration and can be fatal within hours if untreated.
Sudan has been ravaged by fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group since April 2023.
The fighting has resulted in more than 20,000 deaths and displaced over 14 million people, according to estimates from the UN and local authorities.
