MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AA) - At least 30 people were killed and a dozen others injured in a suspected Boko Haram attack in Nigeria's northeastern Borno State, eyewitnesses and officials said on Monday.
The attack occurred along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Highway in Auno town on late Sunday, according to local residents.
Adamu Saleh, a bus driver in the area, said the terrorists opened fire on vehicles parked along the highway after the military closed the road as part of security measures.
About a dozen vehicles -- including trucks -- carrying food and other household items were burnt by the terrorists in the attack.
Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno State, visited the site of the incident and confirmed the attack.
"Residents here said over 30 lives were lost. This is what the community told me," Zulum said in an interaction with military troops.
However, Maj. Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi, commander of the counter-terrorism operation in the northeast, said 10 people were killed.
