ANKARA (AA) – Swedish geneticist Svante Paabo was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine on Monday for his discoveries about human evolution.
The Nobel Assembly in Sweden honored Paabo “for his discoveries concerning genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.”
Paabo was born in 1955 and specialized in the field of evolutionary genetics. One of the founders of paleogenetics, he has worked extensively on the Neanderthal genome.
It was the first Nobel Prize awarded this year, with more announcements to be made over the week.
