ISTANBUL (AA) - Olympique Lyon confirmed Monday the signing of the Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri from Liverpool for a fee of €6 million ($7 million), with a maximum of €5 million ($5.9 million) in bonuses.
"After having passed his medical today in Lyon, Xherdan Shaqiri has signed a 3-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais, until June 30, 2024," the French team said in a statement.
Shaqiri, 29, who is originally from Kosovo, has 96 caps for the Swiss national team, with whom he has participated in three FIFA World Cup tournaments (2010, 2014, and 2018) and two European Championships (2016, 2021), having eliminated France in the Round of 16 on June 28 in Hungarian capital Bucharest.
He is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Swiss football along with Alexander Frei and Stephane Chapuisat.
Having netted eight goals in 17 games, Shaqiri is currently the Swiss national team’s top scorer in major international tournaments.
Also, he helped both Bayern Munich and Liverpool win UEFA Champions League titles.
