GENEVA (AA) - Global warming poses a threat to world peace, the Swiss president has warned.
In a speech to the annual UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Alain Berset said that global warming has gone from an abstract concept to an overwhelming reality which worsens inequality, risks stability, endangers food security and biodiversity, increases pollution, and leads to conflicts.
As such, a strong multilateralism is needed to deal with all the challenges the world faces, he added.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Berset criticized Russia.
The 19-month-old war is also an attack on international law and multilateral institutions, he said.
He decried how the war was started by a member of the UN Security Council, whose primary responsibility is protecting global peace and security.
