System failure hits embattled British Airways

UK airline sees check-ins halted at London Heathrow amid ongoing strike action by cabin crew

LONDON (AA) - Thousands of passengers at the U.K.'s busiest airport have been affected by a technical problem with British Airways computers.

The system failure at London Heathrow -- which brought check-ins to a halt -- came in the middle of a two-week BA cabin crew strike over pay, adding more stress to company’s operations.

"Customers are being checked in as normal after an earlier problem was resolved. We are sorry for the temporary check-in problems which caused some delays for our customers first thing this morning,” a BA spokesman said after the system was restored.

"This issue is now resolved and our staff are working flat out to help customers get away on their holidays."

Members of Unite -- the biggest workers’ union in Britain and Ireland -- began a 14-day stoppage on July 19.

This strike was followed by a fresh stoppage on Tuesday, and is expected to continue until Aug. 15.
