GAZA (AA) - A Palestinian who took refuge in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, thanked US students for their support for the enclave, with a message written on tents.

Abu Yusuf Hamed, 43, did not remain silent about demonstrations in support of Gaza, which started at Columbia University and spread to universities around the world.

“Thank you, American universities. Thank you students in solidarity with Gaza. Your message has arrived,” Hamed spray painted on tents in Rafah.

Hamed told Anadolu that he expects all countries to take the protesting students as an example.

An initial encampment was held at Columbia University in New York, where more than 100 students were reportedly arrested.

The pro-Palestine US campus movement has seen a ripple effect in other countries as well, including the UK, France, Australia, Türkiye and Iran.

Israel has waged a brutal offensive on Gaza since a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group, Hamas, on Oct. 7, which Tel Aviv said killed less than 1,200 people.

Nearly 34,400 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 77,400 injured amid mass destruction and severe shortages of necessities.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
