Tokyo sees first November snow accumulation since 1875

Temperatures drop to near zero in morning, with Japan’s capital experiencing snowfall around 40 days earlier than average

TOKYO (AA) - Snow fell over Tokyo and eastern Japan on Thursday, marking the first time the capital recorded snow accumulation in November since 1875.

Kyodo news agency reported that temperatures in and around Tokyo dropped to near zero in the morning, with the capital experiencing snowfall around 40 days earlier than average.

The precipitation led to disruptions in traffic, including train services that were temporarily suspended due to snow-covered tree branches drooping above tracks.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. was cited as saying that electricity consumption jumped to 95 percent of supply capacity before noon as demand for heating shot up.
