Top Turkish diplomat meets with Libyan vice premier

Meeting with representative of internationally recognized government, Mevlut Cavusoglu reiterates support for Libyan people

ANKARA (AA) – Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Tuesday met with Libya’s deputy prime minister.

Cavusoglu said on Twitter that he had a "productive meeting" with Ahmed Maiteeq.

“Will always stand by our Libyan brothers & sisters,” Cavusoglu added.

Libya’s government, formed in 2015, in the wake of the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, has faced a number of challenges, including attacks by warlord Khalifa Haftar.

In recent months, however, the UN-recognized government has turned the tide against Haftar’s forces.

Turkey supports the government based in the capital Tripoli, and a non-military resolution of the crisis.

Turkey and Libya last fall signed pacts on security cooperation and maritime boundaries.
