ANKARA (AA) - The Turkish foreign minister on Friday expressed sorrow at the resignation of the Japanese prime minister due to health issues.

In a Twitter post, Mevlut Cavusoglu said Shinzo Abe made a great contribution in the sense of improving diplomatic ties between Turkey and Japan.

Cavusoglu thanked Abe for his efforts in this regard and wished him recovery.

Earlier, the 65-year-old Japanese premier announced his resignation due to health concerns, saying: "I have decided to step down as prime minister as poor health should not lead to wrong political decision."

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will hold a poll of selected members of the party for the post.
