ANKARA (AA) – Though the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague rejected many of Ukraine's claims against Russia in its ruling, the Foreign Ministry in Kyiv on Thursday said the top UN court verdict established that Moscow violated two international conventions -- the prohibition of terrorism financing and the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
The ministry commented on the ICJ ruling announced on Wednesday, saying it "has reached a final judgment on Russia's violations of international law."
"Ukraine remains committed to pursuing justice and accountability for all of Russia’s illegal acts, including the full-scale invasion Russia launched in 2022," it said.
On Wednesday, the ICJ ruled that Russia was "in violation" of one claim in each case, but rejected all other Ukraine submissions.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the decision, saying it was "bewildered" by the court's conclusion that Russia allegedly did not properly investigate the activities of individuals who, according to Ukraine, collected funds in Russia to help the people of Donbas in two episodes, as the ICJ itself stated "the complete absence of signs of both 'terrorism' and its 'financing'."
To the other court's admonition about a sharp reduction in the number of schools with education in the Ukrainian language, the ministry said it was "controversial" because the court itself confirmed that people may choose in which language to study and have a possibility to study in Ukrainian.
Ukraine sued Russia for violating both conventions in 2017, and labeled breakaway regions of Donetsk and Luhansk "terrorist organizations financed by Russia."
