Trump accepts Mexican president's meeting invite

Republican presidential nominee to meet Pena Nieto amid controversial remarks

NEW YORK (AA) - Donald Trump is ready to face the Mexican president, tweeting late Tuesday he would take up an offer by the leader for a meeting in Mexico.

"I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow," the Republican presidential candidate wrote on Twitter, his favorite platform for announcements.

Pena Nieto extended an invitation last Friday to Trump and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. While the first female presidential candidate of a major U.S. party is yet to respond, Trump's affirmative reply is surprising, given his track record with Mexico has been tumultuous, at least of recent.

During his June 2015 speech that announced his candidacy, Trump chastised Mexican immigrants as "rapists" and accused them of bringing crime into the United States.

During the same speech he said he would build a wall along the U.S.’s southern border and force Mexico pay for it.

Trump is expected to elaborate on his immigration plan in what is being billed as a major address Wednesday in Arizona – a border state with Mexico.

Part of Trump’s stated plan involves deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants from the U.S.

No details have been released about the time, place of agenda of Trump’s meeting with Pena Nieto.
