Trump, UNSC members to meet at White House

Gathering Monday closely follows first face-to-face between Trump, UN chief Guterres

WASHINGTON (AA) - President Donald Trump will host members of the UN Security Council at the White House on Monday, the U.S.'s UN ambassador said Friday.

Nikki Haley said on Twitter she looks forward to taking the council members to the White House "to have first hand dialogue with the" American president.

The announcement comes as Trump and his National Security Advisor, Gen. H.R. McMaster, met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the White House, as questions mount about additional cuts to the U.S.'s UN funding.

The meeting was the first between the two men after they assumed their respective offices earlier this year.

Guterres "felt he had an interesting and constructive discussion on cooperation between the United States and the United Nations", UN spokesman Stephan Dujarric told reporters at the body's New York headquarters.

"The Secretary-General and the President agreed to meet again in the near future," Dujarric added.

Trump earlier this year proposed sweeping budget cuts to the State Department and foreign aid funding, which would have an unspecified effect on the U.S.'s UN funding. The U.S. is the largest financial contributor to the UN, providing it with more than one-fifth of its core funding, and nearly one-third of its peacekeeping finances.
