TUNIS, Tunisia (AA) - The health of the Tunisian president is improving, an official said Friday.

"President Baji Caid Essebsi’s health has shown remarkable improvement," presidency spokeswoman Saida Guarach said in a statement.

"The president talked with Defense Minister [Abdelkareem Zubaidi] by phone about the general situation in the country," she added.

The 92-year-old president on Thursday was taken to a military hospital in the capital Tunis, his second hospital visit in less than a week.

Essebsi, who took office in December 2014, is due to step down when his term ends this November.
