IZMIR, Turkey (AA) – Forty more police officers, including high ranking officials, have been remanded in custody over suspected links to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) in Turkey’s western Izmir province, judicial sources said on Wednesday.

The suspects have been accused of being members of an armed terrorist organization.

Earlier this month, an Izmir court had issued arrest warrants for 102 police officers in the city.

Ninety-five police officers were arrested and 53 of them had been already remanded over their links to FETO, which is accused of being behind July 15 coup attempt which martyred more than 240 people and injured 2,200 others.

Tens of thousands of people -- mostly teachers and civil servants in the police, military, judiciary -- have been arrested over possible links to the July 15 coup attempt.

FETO is accused of leading a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary, forming what is commonly known as the parallel state.
