ISTANBUL (AA) - Over 61,000 books were published in Turkey in 2018, an official data revealed on Wednesday.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said 61,265 books were assigned with International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN) last year.
The ISBNs were also issued for nearly 400 cd-based electronic books, while some 5,200 others for web-based electronic books and 28 ISBNs for talking books.
"In 2018, the total number of published materials was 67,135 with an increase of 11.3% as compared with 2017," TurkStat said.
The private sector has some 91.8% share in publication of all materials in Turkey, the data said, adding, some 5.8% of materials were published by public and educational institutions, while 2.5% by NGOs.
"The 32.2% of the materials published in 2018 was on education, 17.4% was on adult culture, 16% was academic, 15.8% was on adult fiction, 13.9% was on children and adolescence, and 4.7% on religion," TurkStat elaborated.
Of all the materials published, 92.1% were in the Turkish language, while the share of English language publications was 4.7% in 2018.
On the quantity basis, Turkey's Culture and Tourism Ministry sold 410.6 million book banderols last year, versus 407.7 million in 2017.
In 2018, some 580.95 million copies of books were printed in the country.
With these figures, seven books were published per citizen in Turkey during 2018.
