ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkey on Monday condemned a deadly terror attack in northeastern Nigeria.

At least 60 village mourners were killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack on a funeral in Borno State.

A local official confirmed late on Sunday that motorbike-riding gunmen opened fire at dozens of villagers during a burial in Badu village.

In a written statement, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said: “We are saddened by the terror attack at a funeral gathering that took place in Nigeria’s north-eastern Maiduguri State, claiming many lives and leaving several people injured.”

“We condemn this heinous attack, wish Allah’s mercy upon those who lost their lives, speedy recovery to the wounded and offer our condolences to the people and Government of Nigeria,” it added.

About 20,000 people, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed and 3 million displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast since its start in 2009.
