Turkey's Borsa hits new record

BIST 100 index rises 0.61 pct to close at 103,809.78 points.

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s benchmark index closed the day with a 627.14-point hike to reach a historic new high of 103,809.78 points on Wednesday.

Borsa Istanbul’s BIST 100 index rose 0.61 percent with a total trading volume of 5.3 billion Turkish liras (about $1.47 billion).

The banking and holding sectors rose 0.52 percent and 1.17 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the mining index was the best performer -- up 4.16 percent -- while the investment trusts index suffered the largest drop, 3.47 percent.

Shares of Gozde Girisim (GOZDE), a Turkish private equity firm controlled by food giant Ulker, were the top gainer, up 8.36 percent, while shares of commercial vehicle manufacturer Karsan (KARSN) suffered the largest decline, with a 2.24 percent drop.

The index's top five stocks by transaction volume were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THYAO), private lender Garanti (GARAN), mining company Koza Madencilik (KOZAA), along with two other lenders, Yapi Kredi (YKBNK) and Halbank (HALKB).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate fell to 3.5810 as of 5 p.m. (1400GMT) on Wednesday, compared with 3.6260 at Tuesday's close.

Borsa Istanbul's Gold Exchange index rose 1.26 percent, while the price of gold per kilogram dropped to 140,900 Turkish liras (some $39,318) as of 4.30 p.m. (1330GMT).
