Turkey's budget balance sees $3.3B deficit in January

Tax revenues total $10.7B, interest payments amount to $3B last month, official data shows

ANKARA (AA) - The Turkish central government's budget balance posted a 24.2 billion Turkish liras ($3.3 billion) deficit in January, official data revealed on Monday.

The Treasury and Finance Ministry data showed that the reading widened from a surplus of 21.5 billion Turkish liras ($3.6 billion) in the same month last year.

Down 26.7% year-on-year, Turkey's budget revenues hit 89.6 billion Turkish liras ($12.1 billion) last month.

The country's budget expenditures amounted to 113.8 billion Turkish liras ($15.3 billion), a 13% rise during the same period.

The budget balance excluding interest payments saw a deficit of 2.2 billion Turkish liras ($299 million) this January.

Tax revenues totaled 79.2 billion Turkish liras ($10.7 billion), while interest payments were 21.9 billion Turkish liras ($3 billion) in the same period.

One US dollar traded for 7.39 Turkish liras on average in January 2020.
