Turkey's fishery output rises in 2017

Per capita average fish consumption in Turkey stands at 5.49 kg

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's fishery production increased 7.2 percent year-on-year and to reach 630,820 tons in 2017, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) revealed Tuesday.

Sea fish constituted nearly 43 percent of total fishery production in the country.

"The total fishery production was composed of sea fish by 42.8 percent, other sea products by 8.3 percent, inland water products by 5.1 percent and aquaculture products by 43.8 percent," TurkStat said.

Per capita average fish consumption stood at 5.49 kg last year, up from 5.45 kg in 2016.

According to OECD- the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Agricultural Outlook 2017-2026 on last July, global per capita apparent food fish consumption is projected to reach 21.6 kg in live weight equivalent by 2026, up from an average of 20.3 kg in 2014-16.

The OECD-FAO report added that world fish production, excluding aquatic plants, is projected to reach 194 million tons in 2026, with an overall increase of 26 million tons, or 15 percent compared with the base period (average 2014-2026).
