NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) on Sunday distributed food packages to needy families in Kenyan capital Nairobi, as part of its efforts during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Kenyans gathered at Biafra Mosque in Eastleigh area in Nairobi to receive the food aid.

The packages included rice, flour, beans, cooking oil, salt, sugar and other food provisions.

Emre Yuksek, TIKA’s Nairobi Coordinator told Anadolu Agency that 15,000 people had benefitted from the food donations and 5,000 from Iftar (fast-breaking) programs that are running until the end of Ramadan.

“During the month of Ramadan, the Turkish government and Turkish NGOs are helping our brothers and sisters in Kenya in different parts of the country, we have been implementing the food security program during Ramadan,” Yuksek said.

“We are assisting the disadvantaged populations both in rural and urban areas, in Nairobi, we are targeting urban poor living in the slums,” he added.

The aid comes as different parts of Kenya are experiencing food shortages due to poor rainfall.
