GENEVA (AA) – The Turkish foreign minister on Tuesday congratulated his Finnish counterpart on Helsinki's accession to NATO.
"Congratulated our new ally Finland’s Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in Brussels for their accession to NATO," Mevlut Cavusoglu said in a tweet, sharing photos of their first meeting in Brussels.
Later today, Finland will officially become a member and its flag will be raised at the NATO headquarters at a ceremony as part of a two-day meeting of NATO foreign affairs ministers.
Last week the Turkish parliament passed legislation ratifying Finland’s NATO accession, the last step needed for it to join the bloc.
All members of NATO must approve countries joining the bloc, including Türkiye, a member for more than 70 years.
