ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan sent a message to his Greek counterpart Yorgo Gerapetritis on Wednesday conveying his get-well wishes and support over wildfires in Greece, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

According to anonymous sources, Fidan also expressed his condolences for the two pilots who lost their lives after a firefighter plane crashed.

Persistent blazes continue to ravage numerous Greek islands, according to media reports.

Thousands of tourists were evacuated from some of the most popular destination islands, said daily Kathimerini.

The wildfires spread throughout the island of Rhodes, while Greek and foreign firefighters continued to battle the flames for nine days.

Two pilots died on Tuesday after a plane crashed in the coastal town of Karystos on the Greek island of Evia. The aircraft had been deployed to help put out wildfires in the region.

Several countries, including Türkiye, have reached out to help Greece extinguish the blazes, which have burned houses and forests.
