ISTANBUL (AA) - Türkiye's leading GSM operator, Turkcell, undertook the 50G-PON (Passive Optical Network) test and broke the speed record via a single equipment and fiber core, the company said Thursday.
Turkcell said the test was completed in collaboration with the Chinese firm, Huawei.
The results will play an important role in meeting the communication infrastructure needs of individual or corporate customers, as well as 5G and beyond in the future, it added.
50G-PON offers speeds of 50 gigabits per second.
The technology is used in fiber networks to offer customers a more advanced communication experience with high speed and very low latency.
Speeds of 42 gigabits per second in the downstream direction and 17 gigabits per second in the upstream were recorded in a test laboratory in Istanbul, and up to 59 gigabits per second, were achieved with a single equipment and fiber core, it said.
General Manager Ali Taha Koc said the test marks an important milestone for Türkiye’s digital transformation goals.
Koc pointed out that the record-breaking test is an indicator of Turkcell’s leadership in the field and said the purpose of the test was to offer faster and more reliable solutions to customers.
He added that 50G-PON technology, which can provide speeds five times faster than current speeds, will help create future infrastructures such as 5G and beyond.
