Turkish stocks break another record

BIST 100 index jumps 2.06 percent to close at 103,558.64 points

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s benchmark index closed the day with a 2,085.48-point hike to reach a new historic high of 103,558.64 points on Tuesday.

Borsa Istanbul’s BIST 100 index rose 2.06 percent with a total trading volume of 6.5 billion Turkish liras (approximately $1.8 billion).

The banking and holding sectors rose 3.87 percent and 1.42 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the mining index was the best performer -- up 10.32 percent -- while transportation index suffered the largest drop, down 0.57 percent.

Shares of mining firm Koza Gold Corp. (KOZAA) were the top gainer, up 13.15 percent, while shares of GSD Holding, heavily involved in finance and ship owning, suffered the largest decline with a 1.49 percent drop.

The index's top five stocks by transaction volume were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THYAO), private lender Garanti (GARAN), mining company Koza Madencilik (KOZAA), followed by other lenders Halbank (HALKB) and Yapi Kredi (YKBNK).

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate rose to 3.6260 as of 5 p.m. (1400GMT) on Tuesday, compared with 3.6060 at Monday's close.

Borsa Istanbul's Gold Exchange index rose 0.08 percent while the price of gold per kilogram rose to 141,600 Turkish liras (some $39,030) as of 4.30 p.m. (1330GMT).
