ANKARA (AA) - Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index was sharply down Wednesday to open at 74,561.69 points, amid late projections indicating a Donald Trump victory in the U.S. presidential election.
The index was down 1,806.10 points, or 2.37 percent, after the second transaction of the day. The banking and holding sector indexes advanced by 2.46 and 2.13 percent respectively.
All sector indexes lost value. The textile, leather sector fell the most, down 3.85 percent.
Nearly stock exchanges around the world were shaken with sharp losses as futures of global major indexes such as S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, DAX, FTSE 100, CAC 40 saw losses of over 3 percent, following the unexpected near certain Donald Trump victory.
The U.S. dollar gained value against the Turkish lira traded at 3.1960 Wednesday morning compared to Tuesday's closing rate of 3.1720.
