Turkish stocks end Monday 0.22% down

BIST 100 index falls 216.06 points from Friday's close, USD/TRY exchange rate stands around 5.73

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the day down 0.22% to close at 100,020.65 points on Monday.

Starting the week at 100,445.47 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 216.06 points from 100,236.70 points at Friday's close.

On a weekly basis the benchmark index posted a 2.50% drop last week. At the beginning of this year, the BIST 100 stood around 89,000 points.

During Monday's trading, the BIST 100 hovered between 99,583.14 points and 100,716.15 points -- 41 stocks on the index rose, 50 fell, and nine were flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of nearly 664 billion Turkish liras ($117 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 6.19 billion Turkish liras ($1.08 billion).

By market capitalization, Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($7.97 billion) and private lenders Garanti BBVA ($6.85 billion) and Akbank ($6.69 billion) were the top companies of BIST 100.

Shares of national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, Garanti BBVA, and telecommunication company Turk Telekom saw the highest trading volumes on Monday -- accounting for nearly 27% of the benchmark index's total trade volume.

Stocks of energy and construction company Isiklar Enerji Yapi Holding (IEYHO) showed the top performance -- up 13.16% -- as shares of energy company Odas Elektrik (ODAS) did the worst, falling 5.78%.

An ounce of gold was sold for $1,518.75 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,503.00 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil was $64.22 per barrel as of 7.30 p.m. local time (1630GMT) on Monday -- with a day range of $63.55 to $65.38.

At the beginning of 2019, a barrel of Brent oil sold for around $53.
