ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s benchmark index closed Wednesday up 772.35 points to stand at 88,249.08.
The BIST 100 rose 0.88 percent with the total trading volume at 4.6 billion Turkish liras ($1.23 billion).
The lira stood at 3.7230 to the U.S. dollar at 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT), compared with 3.7270 at Tuesday’s closing.
On Wednesday, the banking and holding sector indexes rose 1.65 and 0.62 percent respectively. The transport sector performed best -- a 2.81 percent rise -- while the mining index saw the largest drop -- 6.07 percent.
The most heavily traded stocks were those of private lender Garanti, Turkish Airlines, Halkbank, Isbank and Akbank.
Shares of Metro, a leading transportation sector company, were the day’s best performer with a 4.81 percent rise. Gold mining firm Koza Altin suffered the biggest drop of the day, falling 7.95 percent.
The Borsa Istanbul Gold Exchange index saw a 0.57 percent increase. Gold was trading at 148,500 liras (over $39,000) per kilogram at 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT).
