ISTANBUL (AA) - Türkiye extended condolences to South Africa on Friday over the deadly building fire.

"We learned with great sorrow that a fire in Johannesburg yesterday (Aug. 31) claimed many lives and left many injured," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We extend our condolences to the friendly people, the Government of South Africa and the relatives of the deceased, and wish speedy recovery to the wounded," the statement added.

At least 73 people died in Thursday's fire in the five-story building in Johannesburg, emergency officials said.

“I saw people screaming and jumping out of the building with some of their belongings. It was very horrifying,” an eyewitness told Anadolu.
