LONDON (AA) - The British prime minister on Wednesday congratulated Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump over his "historic election victory."
"Congratulations President-elect Trump on your historic election victory. I look forward to working with you in the years ahead," Keir Starmer said in a statement.
He said that "as the closest of allies," the UK and US stand shoulder to shoulder in "defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise."
"From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come," Starmer added.
Addressing supporters in Florida, Trump hailed his “magnificent victory.”
Trump is currently ahead of Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris in the race to reach 270 Electoral College votes, having racked up 267, according to The Associated Press.
The win would make Trump only the second US president to serve non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland, who served two terms in the late 1800s.
