ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukraine said on Monday that a Russian airstrike in the country’s northeastern Sumy region damaged a high-voltage power facility.
“At night, the Russians launched a missile-drone attack on Sumy Oblast. Among the damaged civil infrastructure is the high-voltage facility of NEC Ukrenergo,” said a statement by Ukraine’s power grid operator Ukrenergo.
Indicating that emergency recovery work at the facility began immediately after the alarm was sounded, Ukrenergo said that efforts are underway to restore power supply to consumers.
The Sumy Regional Military Administration said in a later statement that settlements in the region’s Sumy, Romny and Okhtyrka districts were left without electricity.
The statement further said that electricity supply was fully restored in the affected areas, while being partially restored in the city of Sumy, adding that works are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Commander of Ukraine’s Air Force Mykola Oleshchuk said on Telegram that the country’s air defense downed 12 out of 13 drones launched by Russia over the Sumy region.
Russian authorities have not yet commented on the attack.
