MOSCOW (AA) - A Ukrainian light-engine plane crashed in Russia's Bryansk region, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the FSB said the cause of the crash is unknown and that the pilot has been detained while attempting to flee to Ukraine.

The statement said: "Employees of the Border Department of the FSB of Russia in the Bryansk region … detected a violation of the state border … by a Ukrainian light-engine aircraft.

"The plane crashed for unknown reasons near the village of Butovsk, Bryansk region. The pilot (a citizen of Ukraine) who tried to escape to the Ukrainian territory was detained by a border patrol."

Last month, the Bryansk region was a scene of open confrontation between Russian and Ukrainian military.

On March 2, Moscow said Ukrainian troops launched an offensive in Russia's Bryansk region and killed one civilian and injured a 10-year-old boy. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it "a terrorist attack."
