Blues capture their first-ever World Club Cup

ANKARA (AA) - Chelsea beat Palmeiras 2-1 in extra time on Saturday to bring home the FIFA Club World Cup.

After a goalless first half, Belgian star Romelu Lukaku brought the lead to the Blues in the 54th minute at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Ten minutes later Raphael Veiga of the Palmeiras equalized the score, and the normal time of the game ended 1-1.

Kai Havertz fired up Chelsea fans with his late goal in the 117th minute while everyone expected the game to go to a penalty shootout, and Chelsea won 2-1.

The victory was the Blues’ first-ever Club World Cup.

In Saturday's third-place match, Al Ahli SC beat Al Hilal SFC 4-0 at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Yasser Ibrahim scored twice for Al Ahli in the 8th and 17th minutes, while the other two goals of the Saudi team were scored by Ahmed Abdlkader in the 40th minute and Amro Elsoulia in the 64th minute.

Organized by FIFA and founded in 2000, the Club World Cup is an international competition held between each year's winners of the top continental trophies including the AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions League (North America), Copa Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania), and UEFA Champions League (Europe).

The most successful club in the tournament’s history is Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid with four trophies.
