ISTANBUL (AA) - More than 100 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported early Monday.

Israeli military gunboats also shelled the city coastline, according to an Anadolu correspondent.

The airstrikes destroyed Al-Huda Mosque in the Yibna camp, and Al-Rahma Mosque in the Shabura camp, as well as 14 residential houses in several areas across the city.

Israeli fighter jets also targeted displaced people near the Egyptian border and the Kuwaiti Hospital, west of the city.

Operations continue to recover the bodies of those killed and rescue the injured from the rubble of the targeted buildings.

The area sits on Gaza's border with Egypt, where Israel forced civilians to evacuate to, claiming it was a safe zone.

The Israeli army on Sunday approved a plan for a ground offensive in Rafah.

Palestinians have sought refuge in Rafah as Israel pounded the rest of the enclave since Oct. 7.

The ensuing Israeli bombardments have killed more than 28,000 people, mostly women and children, and caused mass destruction and shortages of necessities.
