WASHINGTON (AA) - President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law has been taken to a New York-area hospital after opening a letter that contained a mysterious white powder, police reportedly confirmed Monday.
The letter was addressed to Donald Trump, Jr., local news outlets reported, citing senior law enforcement and city officials.
His wife, Vanessa, opened the letter mid-Monday morning. Fire officials decontaminated her and two others before sending them to a local hospital for evaluation.
Police said Vanessa Trump reported being nauseous and was coughing, according to The Associated Press.
It is unclear what type of powder was inside the envelope, but the New York Police Department determined it is "non-hazardous".
"The substance was deemed to be non-hazardous and is being transported to a lab in New York City for further analysis,” police spokesman J. Peter Donald said, according to ABC News.
The White House confirmed the president has spoken with his daughter-in-law following the incident, and the Secret Service said it is investigating the "suspicious package" in conjunction with New York police.
First daughter and Trump advisor Ivanka Trump slammed the incident on social media.
"Thinking of @MrsVanessaTrump & wishing I was by her side today. No one deserves to be frightened this way. There is no excuse," she tweeted.
