BIST 100 gains around 10.49 points at closing session

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index rose 0.97% to 1,096.81 points at the closing session on Monday.

After starting the first transaction day of the week at 1,090.39 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index gained 10.49 points from Friday's close of 1,086.32 points.

During the day, the index hovered between 1,089.54 and 1,095.86 points.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 810 billion Turkish liras ($109 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 11.6 billion Turkish liras ($1.5 billion).

On the first transaction day of the week, 84 stocks on the index rose, eight fell, and the rest were flat compared to Friday.

The price of one ounce of gold was $1,928.50 by market close, down from $1,934.00 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The highest trading volumes were posted by glass producer Sisecam, real estate investment trust Emlak Konut, and Turkiye Sigorta insurance.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Monday that Turkiye Sigorta is bringing together under its roof six different firms: Gunes Sigorta, Halk Sigorta, Ziraat Sigorta, Vakif Emeklilik ve Hayat, Halk Hayat ve Emeklilik, and Ziraat Hayat ve Emeklilik.

This will give the Turkish insurance sector an edge in global competition, he said.

Investment bank Is Yatırım was the best performer in Monday's trading, with its shares up 4.74%, while stocks of electronic appliances manufacturer Vestel dropped the most, losing 1.09%.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $42.05 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) on Monday.
