UPDATE - Turkish stocks end week down

BIST 100 index falls over 550 points from previous close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the week down 0.56% to close at 97,845.20 points on Friday.

After starting the day at 99,201.12 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 553.61 points from Thursday's close at 98,398.81 points.

On a weekly basis, the benchmark index posted a 3.2% decline. At the beginning of this year, the BIST 100 stood around 114,000 points.

During Friday's trading, the BIST 100's daily low was 97,671.82 points while it peaked at 99,514.39 points -- 22 stocks on the index rose, 73 fell, and five were flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the week with a market value of nearly 690 billion Turkish liras ($95.6 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of around 12.4 billion Turkish liras ($1.8 billion).

By market capitalization, Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($5.3 billion), private lenders Garanti BBVA ($4.6 billion) and construction conglomerate Enka ($4.4 billion) were the top companies of BIST 100.

Shares of iron/steel producer Kardemir, private lender Garanti BBVA and state lender Halkbank recorded the highest trading volumes on Friday -- accounting for nearly 22% of the benchmark index's total trade volume.

Stocks of Alkim Kimya, which produces chemical materials, showed the best performance -- up 9.92% -- as stocks of energy firm Ipek Dogal Enerji did the worst with a 9.90% drop.

An ounce of gold sold for $1,438.00 at the weekly close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,720.00 at the previous close.

The price of Brent oil was $30.20 per barrel as of 6.00 p.m. local time (1500GMT) on Friday -- hovering between $29.35 and $30.67 during the day.

At the beginning of 2020, a barrel of Brent oil sold for around $58.
