ISTANBUL (AA) - Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan, already under a death sentence from a previous conviction, was handed a life sentence Thursday in a second high-profile fraud case.
The People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City convicted Lan and several associates of money laundering, illegal currency transport across borders, and fraudulent wealth appropriation.
Lan, head of Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, must now serve an additional 20 years in prison—Vietnam’s equivalent of a life sentence—alongside her prior death sentence.
This latest conviction follows Lan's sentencing in April, when she was condemned to death for her involvement in Vietnam's largest-ever financial fraud case, involving a staggering $12.5 billion.
Lan and her co-defendants have filed appeals against the court's verdict.
