ANKARA (AA) - Uruguay was eliminated from the World Cup on Friday although they managed to beat Ghana 2-0 in a Group H match.
The goal difference between South Korea and Uruguay were tied after South Korea beat 2-1 Group H winners Portugal.
Uruguay needed one more goal against Ghana but the Black Stars did not concede anymore and sent Uruguay home.
The Uruguayans scored two goals in the group stage, South Korea had four.
Ghana had a scoring chance in the 21st minute Friday but Andre Ayew's penalty was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
Giorgian De Arrascaeta scored the opening goal for Uruguay in the 26th minute. De Arrascaeta followed a rebound by Ghana’s goalkeeper to score a close-range header that beat Lawrence Ati Zigi.
Six minutes later, De Arrascaeta scored a right-footed volley in the penalty area after Luis Suarez's lob pass to double the gap for Uruguay.
After the match ended, the South American team's players were furious with the referee because of controversial decisions he made.
Uruguay finished the group in the third spot with four points. Ghana have three. Both nations have been eliminated from Qatar 2022.
Portugal and South Korea are the best two teams in the group and moved on to the last 16.
The Portuguese national team have six points to win Group H.
South Korea have four points.
