WASHINGTON (AA) - The US House of Representatives will deliver two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday.
"Today, I signed the articles of impeachment for Secretary Mayorkas. Tomorrow, they will be delivered to the Senate. The border catastrophe is the number one issue for the American people. We must hold those who engineered it to full account,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said on X.
"Sen. Schumer, hold a public trial," he added, referring to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Schumer previously said the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas are "absurd" and that he would "resolve this as quickly as possible."
"Impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements," he told reporters last week.
The House of Representatives voted 214-213 to impeach Mayorkas on Feb. 13 for "high crimes and misdemeanors, including his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and his breach of the public trust," making him the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in almost 150 years.
