WASHINGTON (AA) - The US House of Representatives will deliver two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on April 10, Speaker Mike Johnson, along with 11 impeachment managers, wrote in a letter Thursday to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
"We urge you to schedule a trial of the matter expeditiously," they wrote.
The House voted Feb. 13 to impeach Mayorkas for "high crimes and misdemeanors, including his willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and his breach of the public trust," making him the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in almost 150 years.
"The evidence on both charges is clear, comprehensive, and compelling, and the House’s solemn act to impeach the first sitting Cabinet official in American history demands timely action by the Senate," said the letter.
"We call upon you to fulfill your constitutional obligation to hold this trial," they said, stressing that the American people deserve accountability.
