US 'incredibly concerned' about humanitarian situation in Gaza

State Department says it is having 'very urgent discussions' with Israel to remind them of their obligation under international humanitarian law to allow in food, water

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US said Wednesday it is “incredibly concerned” about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, particularly in the north, where reports indicate that no food has entered since Oct. 1.

“It has been the subject of some very urgent discussions between our two governments. We have been making clear to the government of Israel that they have an obligation under international humanitarian law to allow food and water and other needed humanitarian assistance to make it into all parts of Gaza,” he said.

Miller was asked about reports that Israeli soldiers were shooting Palestinians who were trying to flee an Israeli assault on Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

He said if they were civilians that were fleeing and shot by Israeli forces "that would be unacceptable."

"We would expect the government of Israel to investigate it and if appropriate, we'd expect them to hold people fully accountable," he added.

Flouting a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued its brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip following an attack by the Palestinian group Hamas a little more than a year ago, which killed nearly 1,200 people, according to Israeli figures.

Since then, more than 42,000 people have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 97,700 injured, according to local health authorities.

The Israeli onslaught has displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.
