US stock exchanges close higher

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude dives 1.75% to $72.92 per barrel; gold falls 1%, silver plummets 4%

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major stock exchanges in the US closed higher Tuesday after a mixed opening.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 140 points, or 0.36%, to finish the day at 38,711 and the S&P 500 rose nearly eight points, or 0.15%, to 5,291.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, increased 28 points, or 0.17%, to end the session at 16,857.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, added 0.4% to 13.16. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1.6% to 4.330%.

The dollar index was steady at 104.14, while the euro remained almost flat at $1.0880 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with gold falling 1% to $2,327 and silver plummeting 4% to $29.50.

Oil prices were also in the red, as global benchmark Brent crude lost 0.2% to $77.11 and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate dove 1.75% to $72.92 per barrel.
