US stock exchanges higher Tuesday

Nasdaq up 0.58%; VIX volatility index falls 2.6% to 14.52

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major stock exchanges were higher Tuesday.

The S&P 500 added 15 points, or 0.27% to 5,579 at 11.13 a.m. EDT. The index jumped 1.08% on Monday to register its best daily performance since early June.

The Dow, meanwhile, was up 43 points, or 0.11% to 40,457.

The Nasdaq gained 102 points, or 0.58%, to 18,108 after it soared 1.58% in the previous session.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 2.6% to 14.52. The 10-year US Treasury yield shed 0.64% to 4.234%.

The dollar index increased 0.18% to 104.50, while the euro lost 0.34% to $1.0852 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed with gold rising 0.4% to $2,406 per ounce, but silver falling 0.26% to $29.06.

Oil prices were down more than 1.6%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $81.02 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $76.86.
