US stock market closes Thursday with losses

VIX volatility index rises 3.6% to 17.05

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major US stock exchanges closed Thursday with losses.

The blue-chip Dow Jones was down 79 points, or 0.23%, to 33,898 at the final bell. The S&P 500 shed less than one point, or 0.01%, to 4,154.

The teach-heavy Nasdaq, meanwhile, added 3.8 points, or 0.03%, to finish the session at 12,157.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 3.6% to 17.05. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1.8% to 3.537%.

The dollar index trimmed 0.1% to 101.87, while the euro added 0.1% to $1.0962 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with the price of gold rising 0.5% to $2,004 per ounce but silver down 0.1% to $25.26.

Oil prices plummeted more than 2.5% with global benchmark Brent crude at $80.89 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $77.22.
