US stock market higher Monday to kick off new week

Precious metals in negative territory; oil prices decline around 1.6%

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major exchanges in the US were higher on Monday to kick off the new week.

The Dow Jones was up 128 points, or 0.38%, to 34,226 at 10.59 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 added 12 points, or 0.29%, to 4,181.

The Nasdaq increased 14 points, or 0.12%, to 12,241 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, lost 1.6% to 15.53. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 2.5% to 3.538%.

The dollar index added 0.35% to 102.01, while the euro lost 0.36% to $1.0981 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with the price of gold losing 0.3% to $1,983 per ounce and silver falling 0.2% to $24.99 an ounce.

Crude oil prices decreased around 1.6% with the global benchmark Brent crude price at $79.09 per barrel and the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price at $75.40.
