US stock market opens Friday lower

VIX volatility index jumps 5.5%, precious metals gain 1%, oil prices down over 2.3%

ISTANBUL (AA) – US stock market opened Friday with losses.

The Dow Jones fell 280 points, or 0.82%, to 33,665 at 9.33 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 declined 36 points, or 0.81%, to 4,345.

The Nasdaq decreased 136 points, or 1%, to 13,494 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 5.5% to 13.62. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, fell 1.6% to 3.703%.

The dollar index added 0.4% to 102.78, while the euro shed 0.6% to $1.0894 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold rising 1% to $1,955 per ounce and silver increasing 1% to $22.46.

Oil prices were down more than 2.3%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $72.45 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $67.69.
